When she came across a vacancy on the Internet for an intern at Limkokwing University she jumped at the opportunity without any hesitation.

“I have travelled a great deal in Europe but I have always wanted to visit Asia which is rich in culture,” says the 24-year-old graduate. “So here I am.”

Ruta from Lithuania...six-hour bus ride to Angkor Wat.

Ruta came to Malaysia in March under a six-month internship with Limkokwing. Little did she know that the Cyberjaya campus has attracted nearly 8,000 students from 130 countries.

The stint was too short for her to explore Asia, so she extended her stay by securing the post of project coordinator at the university.

Now she is killing two birds with one stone – getting hands-on working experience and soaking up Asian culture.

Why did she pick Limkokwing? “I love to be involved in the education sector,” she explains. “It is like being part of life-long learning, part of growing up in a family.”

Relevant courses in Cambodia

To her delight, Ruta was dispatched to Cambodia in August for the orientation of the university’s first intake of students at its newly-established campus in Phnom Penh. The trip enabled her to gain an insight into the country’s history, tradition and lifestyle.

Ruta (centre) with students and staff at the lobby of the Phnom Penh campus.

“The Cambodian students are very energetic and keen on learning through activities rather than listening,” she says. “The courses offered are relevant to Cambodia; they will help to produce a new generation of Khmers who will contribute to its economic development.” The new landmark, a six-storey building in Phnom Penh, has grabbed the headlines. Limkokwing Cambodia is set to transform not only the country’s tertiary education landscape but also the people’s mindset.

In the words of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, “this is a highly regarded university, famous for its ability to empower young people with skills in digital technology and creative knowledge that are needed to excel in a fast-changing global environment.”

New campus in Bali

Ruta can hardly be said to be living in a fast lane. Her hobbies are down-to-earth – reading, jogging and dancing. A creative type, she likes to make fashion accessories for her personal use.

Bitten by the culture bug, Ruta took a six-hour bus ride to Angkor Wat, the epitome of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. The Cambodian fact-finding trip was incomplete with a visit to 12th century state temple and capital city built for King Suryavarman II.

Ruta mingling with Cambodian students and academics at the computer lab.
Ruta also took time off to visit one of the infamous Killing Fields and the Genocide Museum. “That was to learn about the sad part of the country’s history under the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979,” she says.

Now back at the Cyberjaya campus, Ruta is setting her sights on journeys to Thailand and China. She is likely to have a chance to be in Bali where a new Limkokwing campus will be set up soon.

“I hope to visit Africa in the near future,” she says. “Limkokwing has campuses in Botswana and Lesotho. The university believes in discovery and exploration. Well, you can count me in.”

Being Cambodian for 1 month

<o:smarttagtype name="country-region" namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype name="place" namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:smarttagtype>

Hello,

Being Cambodian for 1 month?

It's like tasting something totally new, never tried before.

My experience in Cambodia I would split into 2 parts: working and cultural. Both of them are full of learning and new experiences.

I always wanted to see how a new educational institution is established; I always wished to see a real Asian country (REAL in my understanding and stereotypes:). So, Cambodia, here I come!

Working and…

At the moment I came (28th July), it was 2 days left until students’ orientation days for which me and my colleagues were responsible. How would I describe Cambodian students? They are full of energy and really keen on learning through activities rather than listening. During two days of orientation they got to know why Limkokwing is relevant in Cambodia, what University is all about in terms of global platform, academics, and student activities. Lots of information, sharing, and fun.

Besides the orientation days, I was also working on marketing, research on opportunities for University in this country as well as lots of down to earth jobs. The crazy thing in Cambodia is that 24/7 you are with your colleagues. We live together, go to uni together, work together, go back together, eat together, go out together, share rooms when sleeping... More then the family:)

…cultural

The second part of my experience is cultural and this is the same exciting. Cambodia is a country that has a glorious history with Angkor Wat and other temples build in earlier centuries that I had a chance to visit while staying here. The pyramids or Machu Picchu of Asia!

However, Cambodia has a sad part of their history as well. 1975-79 Khmer Rouge regime wanted to create agricultural communism in the country, therefore, a lot of people were killed, the country is still trying to recover. One of the weekends together with other colleagues we visited Killing fields and genocide museum.

And now about everyday life there, simply going into the street…

…buildings

When we were landing in the airport, the first thought of mine was: were all the scyscrapers that we are used to see in most of the capital cities are? On the way to Uni we had to use country road with the wholes almost equal size to the tyre. Not that bad though, after a while we got used and the roof of the van was soft.. just in case:)
…cars
In the roads you can actually see the real Cambodia - country without middle class people. They either use tuk tuks or motorbikes OR LEXUS cars. Have never seen such a big concentration of LEXUSes’ before. And if they use tuk-tuks or motorbikes - no free space is left not used (the load is 1,5metres to all sides). So, there people are either VERY POOR or VERY RICH.

…other experiences in the street:

To cross the busy street in Cambodia takes time if you are not local – the best way to do is to go near the local person and cross together

My last day of stay I tried going by motorbike to work with my colleague – a very local experience going along dusty street, diving into the busy traffic without any order, crossing flooded road by simply by raising the feet

Almost in every step you take, a small child comes and offers to buy post cards, books, clean your shoes, etc. On the one hand I felt sorry for them on the other hand it was annoying when “no, thank you” does not help. I would not call them prostitutes in a real sence, they are more seem like small teenage girls, really shy and just try to satisfy the demand of the tourists.

So, if you enter a club you can get one for around USD 5 just to spend evening and entertain you, and then – the night comes (don’t ask the prices, haven’t found out yet:)).

Who is responsible for that? Well, I don’t agree with the statement “it’s Cambodia”. It’s more about the people who are using the situation of the country. In general prostitution is a normal profession when it’s done by conscious grown-ups but I do not think that those children really understand what’s happening.

Markets and money

In Phnom Penh there are two main market – central and Russian (probably because of their previous friendship with communists). You can buy there anything – from silver which is very typical and relatively cheap there to lots of different souvenirs to household goods, etc. Bargaining is needed especially if you are not local – you can get things 3 times cheaper. Though for me it was harder than for my Asian colleagues as somehow people think that white skin means “has money”.

In Cambodia US dollar is used as a currency, so everything there is quite expensive. The second try was more successful as we bought the tickets 5 days in advance (this is advice for those planning to visit the Cameron highlands).

14 people, 8 am ready for 4 hours of journey. It was not boring at all – the bus was very comfortable, so most of us just used the chance to sleep. The interesting and tough for our stomachs part of the journey started when we reached the foot of the highlands. The way up was a long serpentine, so some guys in the bus were not very comfortable (you know the feeling when you are in the sea and feel that it asks to give what your stomach has:)).

We arrived to one of the 3 villages – Tanah Rata - in the Cameron highlands where we were met by the owner of the hostel and brought to the place by a van (max 5 min by walking from the bus station:)). For the first day we decided to take a touristic tour around the highlands and experience its countryside. Let’s go!
The first stop – tea factory and tea plantations. The process for getting the black tea that we drink consists of 5 steps:
1. Withering
2. Rolling
3. Fermentation
4. Drying
5. The plan implemented by 4 people.
Plan B – choosing one of the tracks from the lonely planet guide and go hiking alone. The plan implemented by 8 people.
Plan C – sleeping in and going around the village. The plan implemented by 2 people.

My plan was B:) a bit complicated but really nice. Here is a diary from our journey:
"
10.53 We are lost 2nd time.
Good news we are still close to the hostel, we are going further ( this is a place where we went the wrong way at the beginning ( with the sign beware of the dogs - we are still in the village )

11.30 We finally found the path nr 9. Crossed the little bridge and saw a sign to robinsons falls.

11.40 Photosession by the river – interesting and beautiful place.

11.50 we still stick to the path nr 9. We are on the point to go to path nr 8 (jungle walls). Though we are going further with path nr 9.

13.01 after 1 hoiur of walking down with sleepery and steepy road with the width of 1 meter we managed to get to the road. Just next to the road there is an interesting chinese house looking like a temple. We are trying to figure out the way home.

13.30 we follow the road. Lost for the 3rd time. Lithuanians say that we are on the way to BOH tea plantation. Do not know what to believe – Mr. P

14.30 Its 14.30 after long walk along the road we reached BOH tea plantation and the factory. So the same place as yesterday ( it turned out that I was wrong :P)

We do not have much time and to home there is a looooooooooooooong way…
"

Shortly – we were lost during first 15 minutes. However, afterwards came back on track. We passed a small Robinson’s waterfall, were trekking in the forest, saw farms where they grow different vegetables (the climate is really nice for that), and finally reached really beautiful tea plantations that were far less touristic then visited the first day. See it through the eye of the camera::::::::::::::::::

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; And the diversity of the country was truly expressed in the variety of colours.

Lots of faces of Putrajaya's Palace of Justice (the projection was provoking ‘wows’ every time it changed).

The dance of rikshaws – typical bicycles from the old capital of Malaysia – Melacca.

And now let’s dive into colours and the cultural diversity!!!!!! Trip to Taman Negara – National Park of Malaysia was one of those.

This trip did not provide us with comfortable rest, with soft bed, with hot shower. We did have to sweat a lot, had to challenge our limits and at some points to decide if we really wanna continue.

REMARK. Do not try to repeat the story below without the supervision of experienced people:P
The ssstory begins...

Trip to and in Taman Negara could be divided into 2 parts: easy and hard.

The easy part

Started by taking a bus to a village called Jerantut, having delicious Malaysian dinner and spending the night there to take ferry at 9am.

Offtopic.

The food that you can see in the picture is called Satay. It’s small peaces of chicken cooked on wooden sticks on fire and usually eaten with cucumbers and peanut sauce. Yami, yami...

The ferry to the jungle place (Kuala Tahan) took 3 hours – 3 hours of sleep, chating, looking around and seeing the life of the river.

Malaysia is the right place for all types of logistical misunderstandings. So, when we arrived and found out that the hostel we booked was actually not booked, it was not that surprising. The interesting thing is that there is always a solutions and the way out even from the most messy situation:) So, finnaly half of us got a room for 5 in the same hostel and other half – in the hostel nearby.

After solving this byyyg problem, the next stop was canopy walkway where you can go for a walk above trees of the rainforest. One of the thoughts during conquering the distance was – why people are so trustful creatures? Without any fear we were walking on some rope and wood structure. By the way this canopi walkway is the longest in Malaysia.
The hard part from during the easy day was climbing up the Teresik mountain – 300 metres high MOUNTAIN but tough one in Malaysian climate:)

The hard part

The hard part of the trip lasted for 2 days. And of course started with logistical misunderstanding:) the day before we booked the package with the guide, and observation hide-sleeping place. When we arrived to the starting point to the jungles it turned out that our sleeping place in the jungles is not booked and we need to choose another route. Well, what to do? Very spontaneous, fast and interesting replanning – 6 hours of trecking in front.
What we remember the most from the treck that day is leeches; leeches... very innocent creatures when u see for the first time - even smaller then earthwarm (sliekas) but after sucking the blood transformation into a big fat warm happens:) the BAD thing is that you can hardly escape because they can sneek into the socks, they can climb up your shoe and leg, you cannot feel when they suck the blood. The GOOD thing is thqt even if you got 12 of them stuck to the leg – it’s not dangerous (unless you get infection through the wound).

And we had the winner – donour of the trip. Drums and applauses go to Povilas!!!
The second challenge of the day - crossing the river. Just waist high – told the guide!:)
After all these challenges, forcing our way through the jungles, following footprints of the elephants, we reached the point where we had to make the decision. Back to the village, to the cold beer, to warm beds
OR
3 more kilometres and sleeping in the middle of the jungle in the observation hide in the sleeping bag.

Hard decision: half of us chose one way, half - another. No wrong or right decision – it’s called MY DECISION.

Sleeping in the jungles is an experience, unfortunately, no tigers, bears, elephants sleeping together. We were listening to insects, birds, watching fire flies flying around, chating about biology and medicine as if someone of us had a clue about this:) And then – hard wooden two-storeyed bed was waiting for us.

But sleeping in the jungles was just the cream of the cake. From there we left to the Limestone cave – Gua Telinga (Ear’s cave). The way to the cave was really easy, no leeches – we felt like at home, Tarzans of jungles. The cave from the outside did not look anything special as well. The real adventure started when the guide told us to leave our bags outside, take only torchlights and cameras. First steps were nice, we thought: OK, cave visit is done, however, our guide told to follow him.
And we followed...
I think there were at least 3-4 times when we were about to turn around but then we were seeing our guide dissapearing in the darkness.
And we followed...
Crawling in the bat shit, watching bats flying into us but never hitting our faces, passing a mini lake (this place was really hard) and leaving cave smelling like shit but happy about experience got.

It’s like life – the deeper in the shit you are, the more you value the things afterwards, the more you increase your comfort zone, and have memories of life. TO BE CONTINUED…

Colours of Malaysia - from the islands to the jungles (PART 1)

Ni hao! The approvals have to be got for smallest decisions. The feeling that you are small and insecure is in the air:) At the end it depends on you if you accept this feeling or not as, to my mind, the hierarchical system developed not only because bosses are bossy but also because in general people are obedient, tend to obey and accept the situation.

One of the best illustrations for this is a story from one of the friends who from time to time was doing presentations to her colleagues at work. And whenever her boss was there, he was the only one asking questions – others were just too afraid to do this when he was present.

Even being hierarchical, the system of responsibilities is not really clear. First weeks I was totally mixed as we had to submit reports for 5 different people in very different positions. Well, I would not say that situation is crystal clear already, but it’s OK:)

Working culture here is more based on emotions and intentions, not agreements, logic, and management. And this is not easy for European person who wants to have a clear answer and decision made:) Some decisions are made without efficiency analysis and reasoning. This is well reflected in the management system which could be named “NOW”. I wann a meeting with you NOW? Your are going on a business trip TOMORROW. You will work on Sunday THIS WEEKEND. These are not funny phrases; these are situations that happened to me or other interns:) At the end this culture never lets you to be bored:)

You can hardly hear a Malaysian person telling NO – for them it somehow happens very naturally. Now whenever I hear “can can”, I tend to double check if the answer is really yes or it’s “yes” that will be politely forgotten. In general, negative information or constructive feedback is not there.

Foreigners can do career faster in Malaysia. A big community of expats (that’s how they call foreigners working in Malaysia) could be found here. And actually Malaysia benefits a lot because of this open policy as the know-how of different countries helps the country to develop faster.

BUT WHY? Is it possible to put everything into a smooth flow?

In a warm climate people spend more time not thinking how to survive but what’s life all about...

...and when you think about this for a long time you find that a human being is basically just one of the species, very vulnerable (especially that here a lot of natural disasters)...

...therefore, people here in Malaysia/Asia tend to be obedient, never say no, are more emotions oriented, never define clear responsibilities...

...therefore bosses have to be bossy, to push the company/organization forward.

And at the end the final message: IT’S JUST DIFFERENT!:) Coming to another culture, I always have the principle to accept it and at the same time to give something that I have the best from my culture.
With this blog I will try to pass a little doze of what it is like to live here. However, if you have a chance, just grab your backpack and come here!

Malaysia-truly Asia:)
If someone wants to imagine Malaysia, try to imagine a country with a big mixture of cultures, religions, cuisines, wealth and poverty, hot and cold, sunny and rainy at the same time (hot an d humid climate).

There are 3 main nationalities in Malaysia: Malay, Chinese and Indians. The main religion is Muslim, however, you can see Hindu, Buddhist, Christian temples as well.

And because of this diversity, you can really feel the spirit of Asia – most of the countries are represented here.

Indian temple in Batu caves.
Chinese food and eating place in Singapore.
First video - when it rains, it really rains... And for me it was strange, especially when there is a word ''creativity'' mentioned everywhere. However, after some contemplation, I came up with the theory that ''creativity has to be in your mind, not clothes''. And even though this theory did not prove correct, I still have it in mind to have more ownership towards being woman in black:)

5 weeks have already passed in Malaysia.
